A misdemeanor in New York can be anything from disorderly conduct to shoplifting and can vary slightly from state to state. What may be a felony in New York might be a misdemeanor in New Jersey, and vice versa. A New York misdemeanor is considered a lesser criminal act, or an act of lower offense. Misdemeanor means an offense, other than a “traffic infraction,” for which a sentence to a term of imprisonment in excess of fifteen days may be imposed, but for which a sentence to a term of imprisonment in excess of one year cannot be imposed.

There are two classes, A and B with A being more serious. They are usually defined as a crime which is punishable by up to a year in jail time. Sometimes that jail time is served in a local county jail instead of a high security prison.
