Wappingers Falls, New York–A Sullivan County jury awarded a verdict over a million dollars on Tuesday, May 22, to a couple who were seriously injured when a deck collapsed at a home they were visiting after a trial. Stenger, Roberts, Davis & Diamond, LLP (SRDD Law) Personal Injury Team represented the couple at trial.
The husband and wife fell 15 feet onto a cement landing when the wooden second floor deck collapsed underneath them. SRDD Law attorney Jessica Segal had represented the couple in the previous trial on liability in which a jury found that the building’s owner was responsible for not maintaining the premises. The couple were visiting a friend at the residence when they fell. The jury awarded $1.1 Million to the couple.
The wife suffered fractures to her hip, femur and knee requiring surgery. The husband suffered multiple burst fractures and herniated discs to his back.
“Landlords have a responsibility to keep their buildings safe both for tenants and guests,” Segal said. “Our firm is dedicated to making sure Landlords who fail in that responsibility are held accountable.”
